What is the Furbo Dog Camera?

The Furbo Dog Camera is a treat-tossing dog camera for canine owners who suffer from separation anxiety when leaving their beloved pup at home. Also used to keep an eye on your dog when you don’t quite trust them to not cause mayhem when left unsupervised.

Furbo Dog Camera Review

This dog camera packs an impressive 1080p HD resolution with night vision mode, two-way audio for remote pet communication and that awesome treat-tossing cannon. The Furbo makes for an impressive, albeit expensive, Wi-Fi-connected pet gadget. I also know cat owners that use this pet camera and treat tosser.

Key Features

  • 1080p HD camera with night vision
  • Two-way audio
  • Treat dispenser
  • Android and iOS app
  • Wi-Fi connected
  • Works with Alexa

Design and Setup of the Furbo Dog Camera

Design:

I have tested many of the traditional Wi-Fi-connected dog surveillance cameras. The Furbo is one of the nicer looking units I’ve seen. It has a glossy-white finish and a removable wooden lid covering the top. The height is necessary to provide adequate room to store your dog’s favorite treats in the easily-accessible hopper.

Setup:

Setup is simple. Just plug in the included AC adapter, which also has a micro-USB connection on the other end.

Next, install the Furbo app on Android or iOS. You will be taken through the pairing process  which uses Bluetooth in order to give the Furbo your Wi-Fi details.

The Furbo app will then take you through a tutorial on some of the functionality, while also making you aware that you shouldn’t shoot your dog in the face with treats. The treat dispenser has a velocity that will create a mild annoyance if it accidentally hits your dog, cat or other pet.

There’s no wired Ethernet, so make sure you place the Furbo within range of your wireless router or you will be disappointed by lacklustre networking.

I keep mine up on a shelf. Placing it high is a good idea for a number of reasons. You don’t want your inquisitive dog to discover that she can tip it over to access all the tasty treats. Another reason to place it high is the wide-angle camera is aimed slightly downwards, making it a little obscured if placed on the floor. Better to go at a higher vantage point to discover what your pooch does during the day.

How to toss a treat with the Furbo

To toss a treat to your pup, simply slide the treat icon up in the app’s video feed. You’ll want to keep in mind the distance they can fly when aiming the Furbo; otherwise, treats might end up under other furniture; although, this might keep your pet occupied a little longer. Depending on the size of the treats you put into the hopper, the cannon might shoot two or three at a time.

The App and Performance for the Furbo

In terms of the actual performance of the 1080p resolution camera, I am pleasantly surprised. Video quality is crisp, bright and vibrant compared to other home security cameras.

The wide-angle lens has a pretty good view of your room, provided you’re smart with your placement. However, for the price of the Furbo, it would have been nice to have some sort of pan and tilt functionality.

There’s a night vision mode that works equally as well. The Furbo makes spying on the dogs at night a possibility from the convenience of a bedroom or while I’m at work.

There’s also up to 4x digital zoom, which you use through intuitive pinch to zoom in the video feed of the app. It works about as well as you’d expect for digital zoom; the closer you zoom in, the worse the quality gets.

Treat dispensing: you’re able to use the app to record your own custom “Treats Call” that plays whenever you decide to remotely deliver treats. You can say “Who wants a snack” for a recording. If you’re not that kind of a dog owner, you can just use the standard sound.

There is also automatic bark detection. It will push notifications to your phone to let you know if your pup (or kitten) is being disruptive while you’re away. You can then tune in and try to calm them down. But even at the lowest sensitivity level, it was getting triggered just by the sound of the dogs playing with one another, so I turned that off.

The audio is not quite as good as the video. The built-in speaker isn’t great, but your dog probably isn’t going to mind too much. My dogs come over to the camera when called.

From the Manufacturer:

Also works with Alexa!

2 people can be watching at the same time. Everyone has the same account with the username and password and can all be logged in on their phones, but only 2 people viewing at the same time.

Should you buy the Furbo Dog Camera?

The peace of mind of being able to check in on your dogs and interact with them is something you realise you can’t live without. The video quality is super and the treat dispensing works great. It is an attractive and well-designed pet gadget. Now that I’ve been using it, I can’t imagine not having it.

Does every dog or cat owner need to have a gadget such as the Furbo Camera? Probably not. For the money, the Furbo is not perfect. I’d like to have pan and tilt functionality and better audio, but it does offer a lot of what most pet owners want and need.

Because of its price, the Furbo is likely to fall into the “luxury” category more than the “must have” category for most dog owners. But if no expense is spared when it comes to your precious and beloved “Rover”, you’ll find plenty to like about the Furbo.

My Verdict for the Furbo Pet Monitor and Treats Tosser

The Furbo packs great video quality and treat dispensing into an attractive pet-monitoring system. I use it daily and feel this is the best dog camera monitor and highly recommend it! It’s “peace of mind” for every dog parent.

Dog nanny cams, this is a thing! And they spit out treats, holy crap! I wonder if a cat would respond to this kind of technology. I can see how it would be really reassuring for them to hear our voices through the day, and more so for us to see what they’re up to…very cool product, always something new to learn here 🙂

With a high-strung Yorkie/Terrier mix pup in the house who loves treats, this sounds like a great product. She was a rescue dog and noise is not her friend. So I wonder how much noise the device makes, although the treat reward would surely offset the noise factor. I think she would get used to it. You have a great site with a lot of good ideas. Plus, you’ve found a cool way to help pets that need a good home. Bravo!

Hello Colleen, your little mix sounds like one of mine. The terriers are definitely high strung. I wish I had 1/2 as much energy! The treat tosser really isn’t loud at all. If she likes to eat like mine, she won’t care about it or she’ll get used to it and look forward to it. Thank you so much for rescuing your fur baby! 🙂

  • Furbo Dog Camera Looks so cool. I mean really, I can throw a treat with an app through the Furbo Dog camera? That is so cool. I will have to look into this for my dogs. Love your review and the Video was a nice touch. Now to go check out the Furbo Dog Camera/

  • Wow, wow ,wow, what an awesome product with an awesome reviews. I am sure it is perfect for dog owners. I think everyone who have dog gets separation anxiety when leaving them at home and this product is “a must” for all of them. I will share and recommend it to all dog owners I know.

Hello Sarah, this is a great camera for watching your pets to make sure they don’t get into any trouble when you’re not at home. Thank you for visiting my site. 🙂

  • I do like the look of this product, however, I wonder about its durability for a boisterous larger dog. I have a dog who is crazy boisterous and weighs about 28kg and if she knows there is food somewhere she will stop at nothing to destroy what is in her way to get to it. Do you think this product is durable in that respect?

    • Tammy

Hello Megan, I keep mine up high on a shelf. Otherwise, if the dogs knock it over, all the treats would spill out. You would want to keep it where your dog can’t reach it. Hope this helps and thank you for the question.

Oh my gosh, I must have one of these Furbo Dog Cameras for my dogs! I often wonder what they are doing when I’m at work. I have one dog that gets sick on occasion so I could watch him with this camera. Thank you so much for writing about this, I’m going to buy one today! =)
